STAGE DESIGN for the production of Neil Simon's first farce, Rumours (Gerüchte Gerüchte) by Berlin-based theatre company Santinis. The final design accentuated the absurd, comic world of the colourful characters, setting them in a word re-created entirely in black, white and shades of grey, mocking of the Art world and the nouveau riche. The use of revolving doors, hidden elements and objects that were distorted or enlarged served to reflect the discomfort and increasing claustrophobia created by the plot's heightening drama.
Many Thanks to Ivan Vrgoč, Alessija Lause, my fabulous assistant Lisa Buchholz and the workshop of Theater am Kurfürstendamm.
Cast : Julia Bremermann, Nikolaus Szentmiklosi, Urs Stämpfli, Pasquale Aleardi, Ivan Vrgoč, Alessija Lause, Maria Furtwängler and Nicole Marischka.
CO-DIRECTION & SHOOTING for English Dream music video shoot for New York band Spottiswoode & His Enemies.
The final concept for the 14 music video shoot was a kaleidoscopic journey through time. Shot in the St John's Lutheran Church on Christopher Street, we mounted a mammoth projector and screen to show 14 specially edited videos of post war England, which served as a backdrop to the bands antics.
Thanks to the spirited and hardworking team that made it happen and special thanks to Spotttiswoode and his enemies : Riley McMahon, Tim Vail, Tony Lauria, John Young & Kevin Cordt.
CHOREOGRAPHER & SET DESIGN for Once Upon a Dance by Freestate Productions, Singapore.
The final concept was developed from influences as idiosyncratic as Andy Goldsworthy and Maya Deren. Comissioned by the Singapore Arts Festival, the love story was shot on location at Changi Beach and Bukit Timah Jungle reserve. A 4 by 8 metre structure was constructed out of mangrove poles and woven with metres upon metres of coloured ribbons.
Many thanks to Gozde & Russel at Freestate productions and my hardworking splinter-hardy dancers, Sharda Harrison and Walter Hanna.
DIRECTOR / PERFORMER / CONCEPT DESIGNER for Elton John's White Tie & Tiara ball.
A challenging and provocative piece, the brief was to design an installation of a tree hung with 'patients' that were to be constantly managed and 'cared-for' by 'doctors'. Amongst the problems solved were, how to hang motionless without completely cutting off ones blood supply? and how would we know which branches were safe to hang on without sacrificing one of our performers? We all survived and even managed to shock Lady Gaga.
Huge thanks to my 'patient' team : Muriel Rebora, Phil Hayes, Seth Allen, John Edgington and Jane Stockdale
