Theatre companies such as Fura Dels Baus, De La Guarda, Punch Drunk and Fuerza Bruta are known for blurring boundaries between audience and actor. The ability to immerse audiences in alternative worlds comes from experimenting with provocative acts, unusual narratives, complex stage craft, extreme physicality, emotionally driven images and rich sonic landscapes. The experience of performance is changed for both actor and audience member when real contact between the two are made. This sequence of images are taken during a show of Fuerza Bruta, The brainchild of Artistic Director Diqui James.
These photographic sketches were Inspired by the study of Neuroaesthetics and the work of Neuro-scientist Beatriz Calvo-Merino. Vanessa was asked to analyse and ‘perform’ various actions by skillfully imitating movements associated with various domains of sport. What becomes evident through the medium of still image is the transparency of training and intention. Not only was it evident that Vanessa’s physical training gave her an acute sense of body awareness and an ability to effectively translate the tasks, but that her ability to mimic ‘known’ yet intentionally-unfamiliar actions was incredibly accurate.
